necom got a reaction from SuperTramp in Own mining pool - Good idea?
I think it really depends on how much effort you want to put into it. Running pools isn't always an easy thing, from what I've seen. I've not run one myself, but it's a responsibility you take on because you are dealing with other people's money.  You are holding their coins until they cash them out (even if automatic withdraws happen, they're still building up a balance before the withdraw happens).  It's sort of like a cross between an online wallet and a mining operation.  If something goes wrong and you lose peoples' balances, it's real money you're dealing with.

I don't really have much opinion beyond that, but you need to think of why you want to do this. If it's trying to make some money running the pool, then take it very seriously and be sure to bring on some miners at first who know you're testing things and that it's their own risk while you get things working properly.  It will be hard to get miners for very long if they think their coins are at risk, though.

...not sure what else to say.  Good luck figuring it out!

If you do start a pool, you'll maybe have the best luck getting miners by posting it in chat windows on exchanges, forums and putting your pool info in your forum signatures, for starters.

Woot!  I was no help at all, but glad you figured this out.

I'll just add that you can change out a wallet.dat file (like if you have two different wallets with different balances -- not two backups, but two "accounts" with separate balances), you can load up an alternate wallet.dat file without doing any re-installation or blockchain re-download by using the --rescan command:

*** Backup the current wallet.dat file (if you need it) first ****

Put the wallet.dat file you want to restore into your Roaming directory as mentioned above and run the MinCoin QT wallet app with the "-rescan" command. I'll leave out the specifics of how to do this on your operating system, but you'll want to start the QT app from a command like like this:
mincoin-qt.exe -rescan This will tell the app to start up and check through the full blockchain against your current wallet.dat and it will get everything updated accordingly.  It takes a bit of time but it's much faster than reacquiring the blockchain.

I'm really distracted with other stuff at the moment, so I hope I got this clear -- I was interrupted writing this at least 5 times.

User maxalt at mcxNOW.com (linked for search engine goodness finding more MNC stuff, not because I think anyone here needs that link) runs live sports betting in chat and accepts MNC.  First "live crypto-bookie", I think he is.  I do think that's worth noting, since he's so active.

[edit] While we're at it, let's just build some link history here:  At some point down the road, you might be able to do all your live sports betting with crypto-currencies at altbetfair.com instead!

Ugh.. I realized I'm doing too many things at once and they're getting munged together... you were telling me that while mining BTC at Slush, it works, but when you try --scrypt, it doesn't.  Also, we're not talking about Slush's pool, but that was just your example of non-scrypt.

    *sips more coffee*

    OK... sheesh...

If the drivers info I posted doesn't help, please post your full cgminer command line string here, or go follow a guide like on here:

I'm groggy and distracted with too many projects.. sorry if I'm just making noise instead of helping.

The best things to do with a new card is to look around at various "mining hardware" charts and see if you can find the GPU listed. If you can find the exact model, you can often get pretty good starting tips for your own mining & tweaking.

    One such chart:
    https://litecoin.info/Mining_hardware_comparison

Unfortunately, your exact card isn't on that list, but as you see, others nearby have been used successfully.  I do realize that's a Litecoin mining site/chart, but MNC is also a scrypt algorithm-based coin (for now?), so when you find info on mining anything "scrypt" with your card, it will also apply to MinCoin.

These charts tend to list things like overclocking and such, but for starters, just use very basic commands to get the mining software running and then tweak from there (by adding commands, etc.)

For instance, I'd guess this /should/ work for starters by using the guide and command line for CGMiner listed in Vipah's pool under Getting Started:
    http://mnc.vircurpool.com/index.php?page=gettingstarted

If you continue to have troubles, you'll need to post more details about error messages, etc. that you're seeing.

    Good luck!

I just had visions of cheerleaders prancing around shouting about MinCoin... thanks for that.

Also... I think this is about as close to thread necromancy as we've gotten so far.  Sept 24 is "old" for us now!

Just tried again and it showed #1 & #2 on page 1... hmmmm...

Maybe it was something where the databases from my routes weren't updated yet.  That happens a lot since there are so many servers. For now, I'll just say I confirm your results after a botched test batch?
